5 Steps to Take After A Car Accident
In a split second your world can change. Auto accidents happen every minute of everyday across America. Depending on many factors the accident can alter lives in the most horrendous ways. In the best case scenarios injuries are non-existent and all that occurred is auto body damage. In any case be sure to follow these steps to ensure you can quickly put the accident in the rearview mirror and get your vehicle back on the road looking as good as ever.
Check for Injuries
The first thing that should be done following any accident is a check for injuries, including yourself. Once you're sure that you have not sustained any major injuries check on your passengers and people in other cars, if any are involved. If an ambulance is requested or obviously necessary be sure to dial 911 right away.
Call the Police
Regardless of injuries call 911 to be sure there is a police presence at the scene of the accident. Not only will this help ensure no one leaves the area before they should it will allow you to file a police report. This report will serve as valuable evidence for your insurance company.
Once the police have been called begin to snap photos of the scene using your camera phone or another camera. Also be sure to take photos of the driver's licenses and insurance cards of other drivers involved. It is also a good idea to try and get written statements from any witnesses.
Contact your Insurance Company
Before leaving the scene call your insurance company to be sure that you have completed everything necessary to ensure that your policy will be fulfilled. When it is legal and possible deliver the evidence you collected to your insurance company, including photos, the police report and witness statements.
Find an Auto Body Repair Shop
Once the scene has been cleared you will want to find a collision repair shop to take care of the damage done to your vehicle. Your insurance may provide you with a list of suggested shops but you don't have to go to any of these if you don't want to. You have the legal right to select the auto body shop of your choice and your insurance must pay out per your policy.
