5 Steps to Take After A Car Accident

Steps to Take After A Car AccidentLife, in all its joy and excitement, can sometimes take a turn. No matter how safe of a driver you are, there are circumstances that go beyond your control that could result in an accident. The best thing you can do at that point is be prepared. Here are 5 steps to take after being involved in an auto accident that will help ensure your own and others' safety, and save you time and money.

1. Check Everyone's Health Status

Before moving from the vehicle, make sure you have not suffered any major trauma or other injury. Do the same for those in your car. If you are OK and other vehicles were involved, check the health and safety of the people in those cars. If anyone has serious injuries dial 911 right away to call for medical help.

2. Contact the Police

Contacting the police after an accident is always a good idea, no matter who was at fault. It serves as evidence that things were properly taken care of. If other parties were involved, insist that they stick around to file a report to. It will help the insurance companies determine who was at fault. Most importantly, don't leave the scene of the accident until it is agreed that things are under control by all those involved.

3. Collect Evidence

Once everyone has been checked out and the police have been notified start taking note of everything. The best thing you can do is take photos using a cell phone or digital camera to document the scene. Also photograph proofs of insurance and driver's licenses of all those involved. This will help streamline the insurance process when it comes time to getting reimbursed.

4. Notify the Insurance Companies

Before leaving the scene you should contact you insurance company and other drivers should contact theirs. There may be special instruction they have for things they want you to document or have certain questions to ask about the scene. When convenient and legal, present all the evidence you have available to your insurance company, that includes photographs and the police report. If you were not at fault, the other driver's insurance should pay the claim, but you insurance company can help influence the process based on evidence you gathered. Insurance companies may send an appraiser to document the damage as well.
