Does my car need a wheel alignment following a collision?

There are many things that can happen to a vehicle that is involved in a collision, and not all of these problems are purely aesthetic. Even small, low speed collisions can do damage to parts of the vehicle that are detrimental to the driveability of the car. Running into curbs or having a harsh impact with a pothole can result in a vehicle that does not drive as well as it should. Following any sort of accident, even ones that don't result in damage that is visible to the naked eye, be sure to pay attention to the way your vehicle drives. If you experience any of the following issues that small impact may have thrown you car's wheels out of alignment.

Wheel alignment is what keeps your car driving straight with little effort. It means that all four wheels are pointing in the same direction when the steering wheel is centered. Poor alignment can be dangerous as it prevents you from properly controlling your vehicle. This issue can also decrease your miles per gallon. If you suspect alignment trouble be sure to reach out to an auto body repair shop that can resolve the issue.

Drifts to the side

One of the most common signs of poor alignment is a vehicle that pulls or drifts to the side of the road when you want it to go straight. You may experience hard pulling, in which you more or less need to fight the steering wheel to keep the car moving forward, or soft pulling, where the car seems to softly drift sideways. Each of these are a clear representation of alignment trouble and need to be addressed right away.

Vibrating steering wheel

Another common symptom of trouble is a steering wheel that seems to be constantly shaking. If the alignment is off it means at least one wheel is pointing in a different direction than the rest. That one wheel will try and make the vehicle move in away from the direction the other wheels take it. Since the car is basically trying to move in two direction it will cause the steering wheel to shake back and forth.

Uneven tire wear

If you experience either of those issues for you should check the tread on your tires to confirm alignment suspicions. Poor alignment will result in strange tire wear patterns, meaning two tires directly across from each other will wear differently.
